Bavana's Pride Eros:

Our first foray into the black dog in 2012,long before the black dogs of today,and what a disaster that turned out to be! Poor Eros was a perfect example of having an ignorant,uneducated breeder and an equally stupid vet.I travelled over to Holland to bring back this boy.Playing it all back in my mind I know that from the very first sight that I should have just turned tail and run the minute I saw this 'seal' coloured dog,not black, running around the garden.I should have run even faster when I saw what his temperament could be and I should have been in a full blown sprint when they told me he had a urine infection and look,how strange it was that his father had a urine infection at the same time,but no,I still I took this dog that turned out to be a worthless piece of shit in the end and it really wasn't his fault,it was his genetics and the breeder was absolutely clueless.On the way to the ferry from Holland this dog had serious urinating problems so even as I drove up from Dover ferryport I telephoned my vet and got him an appointment asap.Within a very short space of time it had been proven that poor Eros was an affected dog with cystinuria and that poor dog must have been in agony as he tried to pee and all he did was pass drip,drip drips of blood,standing sometimes for a half hour trying to pee.The kindest thing to do in the end was to have the dog euthanised,I informed the breeder,I informed the breeder of the sire,do we think anybody paid attention?? Obviously not, as cystinuria,HUU is STILL coming down the lines.Again,I know I am nagging but a breeder now doing the full MyDogDNA test would see this in the results,they would have known that it is a sex linked genetic condition and they should have removed ALL affecteds from any breeding programme,back then alarm bells should have rung in this breeders haed and these dogs,the son and the father should have been getting these recurring urine infections checked out and the dogs tested! To be fair,this breeder did refund my purchase price so all that was lost was time,effort,shipping and we gained a load of heartache but also with it came the knowledge about a condition within the breed that SHOULD be getting tested for,and lo and behold we also discovered the breed used to make the black dogs,the Cane Corso with it's distinctly curved underjaw and we also learned all about the dilute gene in black dogs..........so Eros actually taught us a fair bit,none of it good for the breed.
